The Orphan Trains
The Orphan Train Movement lasted from 1853 to the early 1900s and more than 120,000 children were placed. This ambitious, unusual and controversial social experiment is now recognized as the beginning of the foster care concept in the United States.
The last generation of Orphan Train riders is still living in towns across the United States. They keep in touch with each other through the National Orphan Train Complex and through Children's Aid.
Today's Orphan Trains
Today's Orphan Trains look a bit different.
We're happy that people are intrigued by that part of our history, but are every bit as proud of the way we help the children who attend our community centers, programs and camps in 2010. Nostalgia for yesterday won't meet the many needs these children have here and now.
If you're interested in the Orphan Trains, why not pay tribute to the organization that ran them and still helps children in need?
