In his annual holiday giving guide, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof gives readers a selection of gift alternatives – creative programs doing good here and abroad.

Included in this year’s list is the Children’s Aid Society Carrera Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program. Developed in 1984, the program operates in more than 20 states, providing adolescents a comprehensive set of supports to help them develop personal goals and the desire for a productive future. One of the only programs in the country with top-tier evidence of its effectiveness, CAS-Carrera has been shown to reduce teen pregnancy by 50 percent.
