David Kirp’s new book (Improbable Scholars, published by Oxford Press 2013) about the Union City, NJ schools has reinforced for us at the National Center the importance of having a long-term vision and a core set of strategies about how to improve opportunities for children and families living in low-income neighborhoods. We appreciated the stories of school reform at all levels—from individual classrooms to district leadership—and were impressed with the ability of educators throughout the Union City school system to harness and enhance the many strengths of this largely immigrant community.
