Study Now, Play Later
Mission
The mission of Study Now, Play Later is simple: Studying is important. Only when schoolwork is finished, is it time to participate in another vital activity: play. Being active is part of a healthy lifestyle, and play teaches teambuilding and other values.
The Study Now, Play Later program emphasizes:
- Academic assistance and encouragement.
- Teambuilding and value-building activities.
- Building healthy lifestyles.
- Developing good study habits and skills.
Who are the Mentees?
Students are fourth and fifth graders, ages 9 to 11, from Central Harlem.
Who are the Mentors?
Volunteers must have a dynamic personality to engage youth in activities and discussions. They also must have the patience to deal with this age group.
What do Mentors do?
Mentors tutor youngsters, teach effective study habits and participate in activities that encourage teambuilding, value-building and healthy lifestyles.
Time Commitment
Mentors meet with youth on Saturdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00/2:30 p.m. at The Frederick Douglass Children's Center (104th Street and Columbus Avenue) and at the Dunlevy Milbank Campus (118th Street and Lennox). Sessions are held from October to May. Note that we do not meet when school is not in session.
