Early Childhood Program

Rhinelander Center’s Early Childhood Program offers young children a warm and nurturing first “classroom” experience. Classes are designed to engage cognitive, social and physical skills. Children learn to work independently and as part of a group. Through art, music, movement, indoor and outdoor play, children develop fine and gross motor and communication skills. During classes, parents, caregivers and children make new friends in the neighborhood. Caring teachers strive to foster a love of learning.

Classes are for children 6 months through 4 years of age. Most classes enroll children within a six-month age span to ensure that activities build confidence and are developmentally appropriate. Three sessions are offered annually: Fall, Spring and Summer.

Stepping Out

Stepping Out is for children ages 10-17 months who are just beginning to walk. Classes include playtime, snack, music and movement and story time. This class is 60 minutes.

Toddler Time

The Toddler Time series of classes is for children ages 12-36 months. Each session includes indoor play, story time, arts and crafts and music and movement. Classes for children age two and older include outdoor play. Separation may be gently introduced for children in the oldest Toddler Time group in the Spring Semester. Class length ranges from 75-90 minutes depending on the age of the children in the group.

Music & Art and Music & Cooking

These two classes for older toddlers (ages 26-32 months) combine music and movement with either arts and crafts or cooking, depending on which class is selected. Children’s creativity is explored with specialists in each field, and there is plenty of time for messy fun! Both classes also include snack and story time. Classes are 75 minutes. Offerings vary from one semester to the next so click on the link for the current selection.

Enrichment Workshop Nursery Alternative

Enrichment Workshops for children ages 2 ½-4, are an alternative to a traditional nursery school or a way to extend the nursery school day. Workshops for 2 ½ - 3-year-olds last two hours. Workshops for 3-4-year-olds last 2 ½ or 3-hours depending on the time slot selected. Each class includes indoor play, meeting time, stories, snack or lunch. School readiness opportunities are built in to the fun. The highlight of each class is the specialty which differs each day of the week. This year, specialties include computers, cooking, music and movement and arts and crafts. Children can be enrolled for one to five days per week. Unlike other Early Childhood Program Classes which register for one semester at a time, children must be enrolled in Enrichment Workshop for the full school year or the summer session. Late registration is possible as space permits.

Parent and Caregiver Participation at Rhinelander

All children under 30 months attend Rhinelander classes with a parent or other caregiver. Classes where a parent or caregiver must be present include Singing Siblings, Stepping Out, Toddler Time, Music & Art and Music & Cooking. Children enrolled in Enrichment Workshops are expected to participate without a grownup in the classroom. We will work with families to ensure that the separation process is a happy and successful one.

Parents and caregivers are also invited to be involved at Rhinelander in a variety of other ways. There is an active Parent Association which organizes family friendly events, holiday drives, bake sales and supports the Center library. There is also a Center fundraiser each year.

Financial Aid

Rhinelander is dedicated to serving the diverse needs of our community and adheres to a need-blind admissions policy. Financial aid is available to those who qualify and applications are available by request.
