The Rhinelander After School Program has been a Yorkville staple for over 50 yrs.  Designed for working parents, our Upper East Side facility offers a warm, nurturing environment and easy transition for their children from school to after school.

Our goal: To encourage and practice newly learned skills from school while giving children time to socialize, explore the arts and sciences, and to just be kids. Exhibits, performances, parties and lasting friendships help make the after school experience a memorable and happy time.

Program Schedule

Housed in NYC's (School) District 2, our After School starts the first day the New York City public schools are open and runs throughout the entire school year — a full four weeks longer than most other after school programs. Clubs run until 6:00 p.m. every day that school is open.

Registration begins January 1st for the following fall. Seats are limited and are filled on a first come, first served basis. A five-day schedule recommended for Kindergarten and 1st Graders; three to five-day enrollment is an option thereafter. Registrations are for the full school year. For more information or to register, contact Alicen Harrad, After School Director, at 212-876-0500.

Arts & Smarts Clubs: 4 ½ - 12 years old

Students are placed into one of our "Arts and Smarts Clubs" based on their age and school grade. Each club is staffed by a head and assistant teacher who provide snacks and homework help while creating the feeling of "coming home" after school. Homework, an important component of these clubs, averages one-hour per session. Children also participate in top quality enrichment activities such as music, art, theater, dance, science and cooking.

Two outdoor play areas provide space for those children with energy to burn.

Rhinelander Center Stage Club: 8 ½ - 12 years old

Includes Voice (Singing) and Articulation, Choreography, Acting and Stagecraft as well as homework time and snack. Although performance oriented and specifically appealing to older children interested in theater arts, Center Stage is designed to help all children develop self-esteem, poise and discipline.  Many of our graduates are accepted to Performing Arts Schools and Programs later on. Center Stage Club runs Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4:00-4:45pm. Longer rehearsals are required one week before performances.

Holiday Programs

Rhinelander offers special holiday programs on public school staff development days, Election Day, half-day holidays and some school vacation breaks (typically President’s Week). Activities vary and may include trips to local parks, museums, and places of interest that make New York so exciting. Children participating in holiday programs must be enrolled in the After School Program. There is an extra fee for this service.

After School Music Lessons

Private music lessons are offered in piano, guitar and drums. Experienced and gentle instructors. Lessons run 30-45 minutes. Club members have first option to enroll in these sessions at an additional fee, but instructions are available to other interested families.

The After School Program fee includes walking service or bus transportation from Upper East Side Schools including P.S.151, P.S.158, P.S.198, P.S.290, P.S. 527 and the Lower Lab School.

Students in the Clubs range from age 4.6 to 12 years old. Rhinelander enrolls students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin.
