Overview

Prevention First-NY! is a five year, $10+ million Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF-SIG) awarded to New York State by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).  The award is administered by the NYS Office of Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Services through the Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene.

The goals of Prevention First-NY! are to:

  • Prevent the onset and reduce the progression of substance abuse, particularly childhood and underage drinking, and reduce substance abuse related consequences

  • Demonstrate a reduction in risks and increase in protective factors in the sub-recipient communities.

  • Build prevention capacity and infrastructure at the state and community levels.

Eleven community coalitions in New York State (two in NYC) were awarded funding as Prevention First-NY!  The communities will implement the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF), a five-step, data driven, logic-based planning model. The sub-recipients will focus on reducing underage drinking in the ninth through twelfth grade population in their targeted areas of intervention, using evidence-based environmental strategies.

NYC Recipients

Throggs Neck Community Action Partnership (TNCAP)

The Throggs Neck Community Action Partnership is a group of committed public, private, religious organizations, and concerned individuals whose goals are to develop awareness of, and devise solutions to the alcohol and substance abuse problems and other high risk behaviors among youth in our community. The partnership meets and works to strengthen the coalition and implement prevention and intervention strategies through community collaboration. Our goal is to prevent use and reduce alcohol, tobacco and other drug use and the negative effects on children and families. In order to achieve these goals we advocate for healthy and productive life styles and respect for the diverse needs of the Throggs Neck community.

UNIDOS Inwood Coalition (UIC)

An outgrowth of the original Washington Heights-Inwood Partnership, ICS’s UNIDOS Inwood Coalition is a third generation coalition of community providers, grass roots associations, and institutional stakeholders that has successfully put a special emphasis on the needs and problems of Inwood’s youth. Funded via the US Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, this prevention project has prepared an in depth Inwood Archival Indicator as well as well as a Service Directory.

UNIDOS aims to identify and mobilize resources to impact the factors that lead to youth problem behaviors (namely Substance Abuse, STD-HIV Infection/ Teen Pregnancy, School Drop-Out, Violence, and Delinquency). UNIDOS has been successful in engaging key community stakeholders in developing and implementing an Inwood-wide prevention plan through such workgroups as the Inwood Community Literacy Network and the Inwood Interfaith Coalition.
