Academic Achievers Honored by Children’s Aid Society

Sixty exceptional high school and college graduates who have participated in Children’s Aid’s programs in Washington Heights, Harlem and the Bronx, were honored on June 14 for their achievements and given scholarships to help defray the ballooning costs of higher education.
These students were all part of Children’s Aid’s E.X.C.E.L. (Education Excellence Creating Empowered Leaders) program, which is a comprehensive education and life skills program that seeks to engage students, ages 13-21, in a breadth of services geared towards preparing them for college and their future success.
Families and Children’s Aid staff cheered the hard-working graduates in a packed Consolidated Edison auditorium as they received their awards. The Honorable David N. Dinkins presented a scholarship named for his father, William H. Dinkins, Jr., to the college graduate with the highest grade point average.
A new scholarship this year, the Jane F. Golden Scholarship, sponsored by Children’s Aid’s Director of Adoption and Foster Care services, was given to an outstanding student who is a recipient of the agency’s foster care or adoption services, and for academic achievement, community involvement and demonstrated leadership. At the ceremony, Golden announced that the scholarship would be renamed the Jean Marie De Veaux Scholarship, after Children’s Aid’s well-loved educational coordinator for foster care and adoption.
All the students worked hard, overcame obstacles and are very high achieving. Children’s Aid is extremely proud of all of them!
