Campers to Spend the Summer as “Tourists” in NYC

With the school year over and the arrival of warmer weather, New York City students’ thoughts are turning to the two glorious months of summer. This year, Children’s Aid Society campers will have the opportunity to become “tourists” in their own city, exploring neighborhoods and attractions that they might not otherwise have a chance to sample.

Each year the day camps based at our community centers and schools focus on a theme – this year it is “My New York City.” The curriculum includes both instructive and fun activities designed to provide children with an educational experience that builds an appreciation for the vibrant city they call home.

Through activities such as walking tours, arts and crafts projects and field trips, Children’s Aid campers will explore the city in a very hands-on way. They will learn about current and past immigration patterns through visits to the Tenement Museum, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Trips to Central Park and Inwood Park will highlight the city’s natural wonders and wildlife. Art and architecture will be visible all around the students as they investigate various neighborhoods. No tour of New York City would be complete without sampling some of the local cuisine – campers will learn about, taste and even prepare some traditional favorites.

By the time these students return to school in September, they will have many fun memories of a special summer – and be able to impress their families and friends with their knowledge of New York City!
