What:
154 parents from across New York City have stepped up to learn how to help educate their children and communities about sexual health and teen pregnancy prevention by receiving training in The Children’s Aid Society’s Parent Family Life & Sexuality Education Program.

This is the largest class in the 23 year history of the program.

Parents from Washington Heights, East Harlem, Harlem and the Bronx received 45 hours of training throughout the school year at various Children’s Aid Society locations and other community organizations.

Who:
The Parent Family Life & Sexuality Education Program supports parents as they help guide their children through the decisions of young adulthood. Realizing the importance of sexual education in their child’s development and their own roles as primary sexual educators, parents commit to training from October to May.

The Parent Family Life Program is part of The Children’s Aid Society’s Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program, a comprehensive “above-the-waist” model that helps adolescents focus their energies and outlook on a future that does not include becoming a teen parent. Through daily participation and support, teens in low-income families and communities are given opportunities and encouragement in many areas of their lives, including education, health care and the working world. The program is directed by Dr. Michael Carrera.

Parent participants are available for interview (in Spanish and English) at Friday’s ceremony.
