In early February, the Epoch Times covered the appointment of CAS President and CEO Richard R. Buery Jr. as Deputy Mayor for Strategic Policy Initiatives. In this role, he will lead efforts to establish universal pre-kindergarten throughout the city, and carry out Mayor de Blasio’s plans to expand the successful Children’s Aid community school model to an additional 100 schools, supplementing the roughly 100 NYC community schools already in existence.

Yesterday, a follow up article examined the challenges involved in this ambitious yet hopeful plan. Community schools are proven to increase attendance, academic performance and student health, but each one costs roughly $1 million annually to operate and requires a heavy amount of community involvement. Children’s Aid hopes to expand upon its 16 community schools operating in New York, however in order to meet Mayor de Blasio’s goal of an additional 100, more funding to the various CBOs and public schools from the city will be needed.
