From the Catwalk to Children’s Aid: Model Coco Rocha Brings Irish Dance to Students
She famously performed an Irish dance on Jean Paul Gaultier’s runway, and for two days in October model Coco Rocha shared her love of dance with students at Children’s Aid’s Mirabal Sisters Campus and East Harlem Center. Rocha, a 19-year-old budding supermodel with Elite Model Management, has been Irish dancing for years with Eire Born, a dance group from her native Canada.
On Friday, October 19, an enthusiastic crowd of 200 middle school students gathered in the Mirabal Sisters Campus auditorium for a performance by Coco and 11 members of Eire Born. The spirited dancing and colorful costumes quickly made Irish dancing fans of all in attendance. There was no shortage of volunteers when students were invited to join the dancers on stage for an impromptu dance lesson.
The next day, Coco and Eire Born paid a visit to Children’s Aid’s East Harlem Center for an Irish dance workshop. Approximately 45 children, ranging in age from 6 to early teens, watched as the group demonstrated two dances. After a fun lesson of basic Irish dance steps, the children joined Coco and the other dancers for lunch, sitting outside on a beautiful fall day with their new friends.
We are extremely grateful to Coco Rocha, Elite Model Management, Eire Born and the Nora Pickett Irish Dance Academy for making this visit possible. Special thanks also to American Airlines, First in Service Travel and The Maritime Hotel.
