Our programs ensure that teens have access to reproductive health care.
Our Comprehensive Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program (CAPP), Well Informed on Sexuality Education, Too (WISE2) operates in Harlem and the South Bronx, where the pregnancy and STI rates for teens are among the highest in NYC. WISE2 includes in-school and after-school age appropriate evidence–based pregnancy prevention educational programming, peer to peer programs, uses creative activities to increase self-esteem and expand adolescents’ life choices, and works with parents to increase parent/teen communication around sexuality.
Youth are engaged by health educators based at WISE2 program sites, who also escort them to our nearby Article 28 Title X funded medical health centers. Community engagement is an essential part of this project.
We join with our partners in the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and other local CBOs in creating Community Advisory Councils in both Harlem and the Bronx, which include youth in community empowerment activities. To further reduce barriers to care, WISE 2 develops systems and strategies to enhance our Article 28 electronic health records system with communication technologies, like text messaging, Facebook pages and teen friendly web-sites that engage youth in preventing unintentional pregnancies and STIs.
