Greenmarkets Created by School-Age Children
Since 2006, Children's Aid has partnered with the Council on the Environment for NYC (CENYC) to operate the Youthmarkets, which are community school-based greenmarkets run by students. Youthmarkets address the acute lack of fresh fruits and vegetables in low-income communities by bringing fresh, local and healthful produce directly into schools where students and families congregate. Students market and sell the produce, do cooking demonstrations and tastings and distribute recipes to families to take home. The Youthmarket program has been overwhelmingly popular and has grown to three community schools in East Harlem, the South Bronx and Washington Heights.
