Training and Capacity Building for Preventive and Foster Care Programs in NYC

The staff of the Children’s Aid Society’s Family Wellness Program has specialized in providing direct services to families experiencing domestic violence and involved with the child welfare system since 2001. Through a contract with ACS, our team of domestic violence experts provides free and ongoing training, consultation and technical assistance to all foster care and preventive programs in New York City. Our goal is to support child welfare programs in developing their capacity to work effectively with families struggling with current or past domestic violence.

The Family Wellness Program provides training on a wide range of issues related to domestic violence and child welfare. We begin by consulting with program directors and supervisors to assess the program’s current practice with respect to domestic violence and staff training needs. We are available to conduct interactive trainings and presentations for groups of any size, on-site at the foster care or preventive agency, or at our midtown Manhattan or Harlem offices. Training ideally takes place in half or full-day sessions, but can be broken into shorter segments when necessary. Below is a list of common training topics, however, we are happy to tailor our trainings to the needs and interests of each program’s staff:

  • Domestic Violence in a Child Welfare Setting
    • Please note that this full day training is a pre-requisite for all trainings below.

  • Supporting Survivors of Domestic Violence

  • The Effects of Domestic Violence on Children

  • Safety Planning with Families Impacted by Domestic Violence

  • Screening Parents, Children and Teens for Domestic Violence

  • Effective Intervention with Abusive Partners

  • Teen Relationship Abuse Prevention & Intervention

  • Responding Effectively to Employees Affected by Domestic Violence (for supervisors and managers)
