The Children’s Aid Society (CAS), established in 1853, is one of New York City’s leading child and family service organizations. Today the CAS Early Childhood Department serves nearly 1000 low-income children ages 0-5 in schools and community centers across 12 sites throughout Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island through a combination of Universal Preschool, Head Start and Early Head Start funding and child care subsidies. The mission of the Early Childhood Department is to prepare young children for kindergarten. The Early Childhood Program Director will report to the Early Childhood Division Director.
The Group Teacher must have qualifications that satisfy Federal Head Start requirements, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Article 47 regulations, and Universal Preschool Guidelines.
Preferred Credentials (required for UPK Group Teachers):
(1) A master’s or baccalaureate degree in early childhood education or related field of study and
(2) A current, valid teaching certificate issued by the New York State Education Department. This may include early childhood (Birth-Grade 2); Nursery, Kindergarten and Grades 1-6; or Prekindergarten – Grade 6 certification.
(1) In order to meet the preferred credentials above, Group Teachers may be on a study plan, approved by an accredited college, to be completed within a specified period of time agreed to by Children’s Aid Society, the teacher and the college which is a condition of employment that cannot be extended. In order to be eligible for a study plan, a teacher must have:
(A) An Associate’s (AA or AS) degree in early childhood education, practicum included; or
(B) Ninety or more undergraduate college credits and one year paid classroom experience teaching children in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten or grades 1-2; or
(C) A Baccalaureate or master’s degree in any other academic subject and one year paid classroom experience teaching children up to third grade; or
(D) A Baccalaureate in any field and admittance into the Teach for America program, passed a rigorous early childhood content exams (CST, ATSW, LAST), and participated in the TFA summer training institute.

A review and final determination of credentials and qualifications are reserved for the site Education Director and the CAS Director of Early Childhood Programs.
Under the direct supervision of the site’s Education Director, the Group Teacher’s responsibilities include the following:
Curriculum and Instruction
• Promote high-quality teaching and learning in the classroom that leads to children’s school readiness.
• Plan and establish an environment in which children develop trusting and accepting relationships with adults and peers that foster growth and development.
• Design and execute a developmentally appropriate and integrated curriculum which provides opportunities for children’s meaningful exploration.
Record Maintenance, Screening and Assessment
• Responsible for maintaining accurate educational records and portfolios on each child.
• Responsible for implementing child observations, screening and assessments. This includes ensuring that all children receive a developmental and behavioral screen within the first 45 days of school and assessment at three time points over the course of the year (November, February and May).
• Encourage parent involvement and communication through a variety of methods (e.g., newsletters, bulletin boards, classroom events, center-wide activities, and “open-door” policy).
• Facilitate meetings with families when there are outstanding developmental or behavioral issues with children.
• Depending on the Center and the funding requirements, participate in home visits, Parent/Teacher conferences, Open Houses, and/or Family Days.
• Participate in offered trainings, workshops, in-service days, and/or all-staff conferences.
• Maintain certification requirements and proof of attendance in professional activities.
• Support the growth of the center including participating in program-wide goal setting and individual and program self-assessment.
• Oversee additional teachers and volunteers in the classroom.
Health and Safety
• Adhere to all state and city licensing requirements, teacher child/ratios, and CPR/first aid certification.
• Maintain a safe and healthy environment for children.
And other related duties as assigned, at the discretion of the Educational Director and /or CAS
