Portland, Oregon – SUN Community Schools Wellness Initiative

As part of their holistic approach to promoting academic success for youth and family self-sufficiency, SUN Community Schools (SUN CS) in Portland, Oregon have addressed health issues and provided health services in neighborhood schools since the initiative began in 1999. As the obesity epidemic has emerged over those years, SUN CS have worked to incorporate anti-obesity strategies into the broader wellness efforts at their 64 sites.

Every Go!Healthy workshop at The Children’s Aid Society schools and camps begins with a rapid-fire, free-form brainstorm: what does the word “food” mean to you? We always get a broad range of answers: family, money, diets, yummy, culture, nutrients, and on and on. Having conducted this exercise dozens of times, I’ve had a chance to reflect on the many answers, and I’ve come to a few conclusions.

James Lyng High School is a Canadian secondary school located in the southwest sector of Montreal in Quebec.  This part of the city was once the heart of an industrial and manufacturing powerhouse, but in more recent times it has become seriously disadvantaged.  Students are characterized by both socioeconomic challenges and academic difficulties, and for many of them, belonging to this school community is the most powerful driver of their resilience.

Although the Children’s Aid Society (CAS) is not an arts organization, throughout our history the arts have been indispensable, not just an add-on.Even during this challenging economic time the Arts Committee of our Board of Directors is determined to maintain the arts across the agency.  Arts exposure, arts education and arts through education for children and youth, and even for their families, are still alive and well at our community schools as well as at our community centers.
